The Sydney Chamber Music Institute is actively seeking exceptional young musicians from private, public, and Catholic schools: students who are looking to extend beyond traditional school music programs, or who want the chance to experience world-class chamber music alongside established professional musicians.
Applications close 15 December 2026. A panel of distinguished faculty will review all applications, with shortlisted applicants invited to audition, either live or by video submission. Decisions will be made by 15 January.
Places are competitive and only a few spots remain. If invited to join, students commit to six coachings across the term, culminating in a performance at the end of Term 1.

Apply NowIn 2027, our Side by Side program pairs gifted students with professional musicians in full concert programs. Not masterclasses on the sidelines, but genuine performing partnerships. Rehearsals run through the term at Master Music Studios in Glebe, with holiday intensives at the Sydney Conservatorium and regional touring opportunities.
Chamber music builds the skills every serious young musician needs: ensemble listening, autonomy, and interpretive confidence. It is also a core requirement of HSC Music 2. Yet it's often the first thing squeezed out of school programs built around bands and orchestras. SCMI exists to fill that gap.
Places are offered on merit and need, and we actively welcome applicants from public schools and diverse backgrounds. Successful students join a pathway that has led our alumni toward AYO and ANAM.

Applicants are also required to submit a short audition video (approximately 3–5 minutes) as part of the application.
A $75 application fee secures your place in the selection process and will be credited toward term fees if accepted.
Applications are assessed based on musical level, ensemble experience, and overall suitability for the program.
Selected applicants may be invited to a short live audition or interview if required.
Ensembles are then formed based on level, instrumentation, and availability to ensure the strongest possible musical outcomes.
Places are limited, and students will be selected based on technical level and musical readiness, ability to collaborate within an ensemble setting, and commitment to preparation and artistic growth.
