Concerts

The Institute presents intimate chamber concerts across Sydney, in which exceptional young musicians showcase their artistry and share the stage with the professional artists who mentor them. Each program grows directly from the ensemble's rehearsal process, drawing audiences into the music itself and into the dialogue and mentorship that shape a performance. Faculty performances by some of Australia's finest musicians are woven through each program, giving audiences the rare chance to hear them alongside our talented cohort of young artists.

Join us for the Sydney Chamber Music Institute's very first concert at ACO On The Pier, a stunning and distinguished venue overlooking Sydney Harbour.

The concert opens with faculty performing a cornerstone of the chamber repertoire, followed by an ensemble bringing fresh energy to the stage. Then our students take the spotlight: each selected by audition and already proven as soloists in SCMI's August pop-up concerts, they come together as string quartets to showcase the artistry and connection that only chamber music can bring. The program closes with faculty and students combining forces for a rich, full-bodied finale that brings the whole Institute together on one stage.

It's an afternoon of world-class musicianship, rising talent, and the intimate magic of chamber music: the perfect way to launch SCMI's inaugural season.

Hourglass Ensemble: Jazz Nocturne

Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House · Bennelong Point, Sydney

Hourglass Ensemble brings strings, winds and piano together for an evening of jazz-inflected chamber music from Australia and abroad. The program includes a world premiere commission from Richard Grantham alongside works by Elena Kats-Chernin, Percy Grainger, Ross Edwards, Nikolai Kapustin and Darius Milhaud. SCMI Artistic Director Adele Ohki appears as soloist. About 120 minutes with a 20 minute interval.

ANAM in Sydney: Folk Journeys

ACO On The Pier (The Neilson, Pier 2/3) · 13A Hickson Rd, Dawes Point

ANAM marks its 30th anniversary with a program directed from the piano by Paavali Jumppanen, built around composers who drew on Finnish and Hungarian folk material: Rautavaara's The Fiddlers, taken from village dance tunes, Enescu's Impressions d'enfance and Romanian Rhapsody No. 1, and Bartók's Piano Quintet, written as he was beginning to absorb the folk idioms that shaped his later music. About 80 minutes, no interval.
